Optical interferometry has always been at the heart of interdisciplinary applications. For decades the subject has expanded from fundamental physics and astronomy projects to engineering and telecommunications studies. With the most recent technologies available, along with an extremely well-connected community ready to employ them, the application domain has advanced into other, less explored areas of research. The aim of this book is to review recent developments in OI techniques and aid readers in their exploration of different aspects of the subject. The focus of the novel reports presented in this volume ranges from traditional topics to newer applications, such as those related to biology and clinical procedures. Although this collection of articles is by no means exhaustive, efforts have been made to provide examples and discussions from as many different areas of this wide-ranging subject as possible.

En parcourant ces pages le lecteur, curieux de sciences et plus particulièrement d’astronomie, mesurera le chemin parcouru pour qu’en ce début du XXIe siècle, l’interférométrie optique soit devenue un outil incontournable de l’astrophysique aux côtés de la photométrie et de la spectroscopie. Cet ouvrage évoque les années durant lesquelles ont été réalisées les premières applications aux observations astronomiques de l’interférométrie optique, à travers les hommes qui s’y sont impliqués, les instruments qu’ils ont mis en oeuvre et les résultats qu’ils ont obtenus. Ce livre résulte d’un projet de mise en forme d’éléments constitués au fil des années, à l’occasion de travaux dédiés à l’étude des étoiles évoluées et des étoiles binaires, au moyen d’observations par interférométrie des tavelures ou interférométrie à longue base ainsi que dans le cadre d’enseignements, de conférences grand-public et des présentations faites à la commission des étoiles doubles de la Société Astronomique de France.
